REDEMOS Public Stakeholders Conference: Germany’s Role in EU Democracy Support in the Eastern Neighbourhood

“German Perspective on the EU’s Democracy Support in the Eastern Neighbourhood Amidst War and Russian Hybrid Attacks” will be the focus of the upcoming REDEMOS Public Stakeholders Conference, organised by TU Dresden, a member of the REDEMOS consortium. The conference will take place on 31 March 2025, from 14:00 to 17:00 at the Institut für Holztechnologie Dresden GmbH, Zellescher Weg 24, 01217 Dresden, Germany.

This event will convene experts from political, academic, and diplomatic spheres to examine the challenges and opportunities for promoting democracy and stability in the region. Discussions will focus on Germany’s perspective on the EU’s democracy support in light of Russia’s hybrid and full-scale military attacks in the Eastern Neighbourhood region.

The event will begin with a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Christian Prunitsch (Chairperson of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dresden University of Technology) and Prof. Dr. Dominik Schrage (Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Dresden University of Technology). This will be followed by introductory remarks from Prof. Dr. Marianne Kneuer (Chair of Comparative Politics, Dresden University of Technology, and Principal Investigator in the REDEMOS Consortium) and Dr. Ragnar Weilandt (Postdoctoral Fellow, REDEMOS, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim).

The welcome address and introductory remarks will be succeeded by a keynote speech delivered virtually by Dr. Anna Lührmann, Minister of State for Europe at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. Her address will outline EU democracy support agenda in the new era of systemic conflict.

The keynote will lead into a a roundtable discussion on the challenges and avenues for protecting democracy in the context of war and Russian hybrid attacks in the Eastern Neighbourhood. The roundtable will feature renowned German and international experts on German foreign policy, EU affairs, democratisation processes, the Eastern Neighbourhood, and Russia. The session will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Marianne Kneuer (Professor of Comparative Politics, Chair of Comparative Politics, Dresden University of Technology, Dresden) and will feature Dr. Susan Stewart (Senior Fellow at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), Berlin) and Dirk Schuebel, (Head of Division Russia at the European External Action Service (EEAS), Brussels), amongst others.
