REDEMOS Public Stakeholders Conference: Democracy and Geopolitics in the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood

The international REDEMOS research project is hosting a Public Stakeholders Conference, entitled “Can Democracy Withstand Geopolitics? The Impact of Great Power Competition in the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood”, on Friday, 8 November 2024, in Tallinn, Estonia. This event is organised by the International Centre for Defence and Security (ICDS), which is part of the REDEMOS consortium.

The Public Stakeholders Conference will address the growing challenges of great power competition in the EU’s eastern neighbourhood and its impact on democracy and regional stability. It will explore how these developments are affecting democratisation efforts, particularly in Ukraine and Georgia, and how the EU can navigate the ongoing geopolitical contest to secure peace and democratic governance.

The event will feature a keynote speech by Mr Luc Pierre Devigne, Deputy Managing Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Regional Cooperation and OSCE in the European External Action Service (EEAS), Brussels.

Among the distinguished speakers are Dr Madalina Dobrescu (Principal Investigator of REDEMOS and Associate Professor at NTNU, Trondheim) and Dr Kristi Raik (Deputy Director and Head of the Foreign Policy Programme at the ICDS, Tallinn). Dr Ekaterine Metreveli, (President of GFSIS, Tbilisi), Ms Kai Kaarelson (Research Fellow, ICDS, Tallinn), and Dr Julia Bader (Associate Professor at the University of Amsterdam) will also contribute to the discussions.

Additionally, Dr Yuliya Bidenko (Associate Professor at Karazin Kharkiv National University and Research Fellow at Carnegie Europe, Brussels), Mr Marko Mihkelson (Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Estonian Parliament, Tallinn), and Ms Lavly Perling (former Member of the Ethics Council of Ukraine and former Prosecutor General of Estonia), will provide insights into the challenges facing the region. The sessions will be moderated by Dr Steven Blockmans (Senior Fellow at CEPS, Brussels and ICDS, Tallinn) and Dr Igor Gretskiy (Research Fellow at ICDS, Tallinn), respectively.
